What To Expect During a Birth Center Labor

Your care team supports you with the same continuity, attention, and calm presence you’d receive in a home birth. We practice delayed cord clamping, keep baby on your chest for immediate bonding, and complete newborn assessments right at your bedside so you remain connected and supported.

Families typically head home within 3–5 hours after birth—once you and baby are stable, fed, and ready to rest in your own space. If a situation arises that requires hospital support, you can feel confident knowing we have clear, established transfer plans and a team trained to recognize and respond early.

All Village Birth Center practitioners maintain certifications in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and participate in regular emergency drills to remain skilled and prepared.

All required birth documents, including the birth certificate and Social Security card, are filed on your behalf so you can simply focus on healing and bonding.

When contractions begin or your water releases, you’ll reach out to us so we can stay connected and guide you through early labor. Many families choose to labor privately or with the support of a doula—we provide a list of trusted doulas upon request.

To ensure you feel fully prepared, we ask that all home birth clients have either experienced an unmedicated birth before, completed an approved childbirth education course, or hired a doula for additional support.

Your birth space is yours. You’re welcome to invite anyone who brings you comfort—partners, children, friends, or family. If you wish, you or your partner can even be the one to “catch” your baby as they enter the world.

What to Expect During Home Birth Labor

Your baby will be placed directly into your arms for uninterrupted bonding. There is no rush—cord clamping waits until you’re ready. We support initial breastfeeding if desired, help you get settled, and remain with you for at least two hours (or longer if needed) to ensure both you and your baby are stable, nourished, and comfortable.

We leave you tucked in, fed, and supported, with full instructions on what to expect in the hours and days after birth. And of course, we remain available 24/7 for any questions or concerns that arise.

All required birth documents, including the birth certificate and Social Security card, are filed on your behalf so you can simply focus on healing and bonding.
